What is solar power?
What is solar power? Solar power is the conversion of sunlight directly into electricity using photovoltaic cells (Solar Panels). It is the most readily available source of energy and it is considered green energy, hence there is no associated risk of pollution of the environment.
Do you know? Just a tiny fraction of the sun’s energy that reaches the earth, has enough power to meet all our power needs many times over, if we only harness it properly. Solar Thermal and Solar Photovoltaic (PV) are amongst the two most widely used technologies. Solar PV, consisting of solar cells has enabled us to use the sun’s energy to power our homes, offices, schools, hospitals, factories etc. by installing a rooftop solar plant.

What is Rooftop Solar Plant?
We have ground mounted solar plants and rooftop solar plants. The ground-mounted ones are typically large-scale plants generating GW or MW power and needing large tracts of open land. Rooftop solar plants by definition are set up on existing rooftops of residential buildings, schools, colleges, hospital, offices, factories etc. Rooftop solar plants are quicker to install and can be set up on all kinds of rooftops across different types of establishments. If you have an existing rooftop, you can potentially generate your own electricity and free yourself from the rising electricity bills. All you need to do is apply for the solar net metering connection.

What is Net Metering?
The Government introduced the Net Metering policy to help consumers adopt solar energy with ease and join the solar revolution. The net metering is a billing mechanism, which ensures that the consumer has to pay only for the difference between the number of units produced by a rooftop solar plant & fed into the grid and the number of units it draws from the grid. In simple words, it works like debit and credit. At the end of the month the energy company will bill you for the difference between the production from the solar plant and your actual consumption of the electricity. If the production is in excess of your consumption, it gets carried over to the next month. The infographic explains the working of a net metering connection.
